Entity Signals: Why Your Brand Must Exist to the AI Before It Ranks

Search used to reward the page that ranked. AI engines reward something earlier and quieter: whether your brand exists in the model’s understanding of the world at all. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews can’t resolve who you are, they don’t rank you lower — they leave you out of the answer entirely.

That shift breaks the playbook most teams still run. This is about AI brand visibility: how AI systems decide which brands are real, which ones to cite, and what you can do to become one of them.

The currency moved from links to mentions

Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews to find what actually correlates with being mentioned. The results invert two decades of SEO instinct.

  • Branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66–0.71.
  • YouTube mentions were the single strongest factor, at roughly 0.737.
  • Backlinks showed almost no relationship at all.

If most of your budget still buys links, you’re optimizing for the old judge. The currency moved from links to mentions — from “who points at you” to “who talks about you.”

What an “entity” actually means to an AI engine

To a language model, your brand isn’t a domain. It’s an entity: a node it has resolved from thousands of mentions across the web into a single, consistent thing with a name, a category, and a set of facts. A strong entity is unambiguous — the model knows what you do and trusts the record enough to repeat it. A weak entity is noise the model paraphrases without attribution, or skips.

The work, then, isn’t ranking a page. It’s making your brand legible enough that the model can pick it up and say your name.

How to build an entity AI systems recognize

1. Say the same thing about yourself everywhere

One name, one description, one category — on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, and every directory you touch. Models resolve entities by consistency. Conflicting descriptions split your identity into competing signals, and the model trusts none of them. Pick the sentence that defines you and repeat it without variation.

2. Mark it up with Organization schema

Add Organization schema with `sameAs` links pointing to every profile you control. It’s the cheapest disambiguation signal you can ship — an explicit, machine-readable statement of “these accounts are all the same entity.” It takes an afternoon and removes guesswork the model would otherwise get wrong.

3. Get mentioned where your engine actually reads

Every engine has its preferred sources. Profound analyzed 680 million AI citations from August 2024 to June 2025 and found ChatGPT leans hard on Wikipedia (7.8% of all its citations, and nearly half of its top-ten sources), while Perplexity pulls heavily from Reddit (6.6% overall, and almost half of its top ten). Find the surfaces your buyers’ AI of choice actually cites, and earn a presence there. Generic PR doesn’t move this; presence on the specific sources the model reads does. This is the core of generative engine optimization.

4. Publish on YouTube, even at small scale

The correlation data is blunt about this: a thin YouTube footprint beats another batch of guest-post backlinks. You don’t need a studio. You need to exist on the platform the models weight most heavily.

Entity first, content second

The order matters more than the effort. A great article from a brand the model can’t resolve gets paraphrased into the void — your insight, no credit. The same article from a recognized entity gets cited by name, and that citation is what sends a buyer to your door.

Most teams have this backwards. They pour resources into content while their entity stays invisible, then wonder why the AI summarizes their idea and links to a competitor. Fix the entity first. Then every piece of content you publish compounds into citations instead of evaporating. It’s the same logic behind a working Growth Intelligence Engine: get the foundation legible, and the experiments on top start to pay off.

See where AI engines cite you today

You can’t fix what you can’t see. The first move is finding out where — and whether — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini already mention you, and where competitors are getting cited in your place.

Run a free AI-visibility check to see how the engines read your brand right now. If the picture isn’t what you’d want a buyer to see, that’s the gap RankBetter is built to close.
